| The Friends of Elizabeth Park was formed in
1977. At that time, the gardens in the park had fallen into disrepair and were being
sorely neglected. The Hartford City Manager and the Parks Department Manager
believed that a group of volunteers could raise funds to provide a much needed boost to
the ailing park. How right they
were! Since that time the Friends have raised funds to refurbish the garden areas,
erect a shelter in the perennial garden, provide for a watering system for the gardens,
and renovate the Pond House as well as purchase plants and supplies for the gardens and
support efforts to increase the awareness and enjoyment of Elizabeth Park.
The City of Hartford owns and maintains Elizabeth Park.
The staff gardeners are city employees. The Friends of Elizabeth Park helps
support the city's work with volunteers and funding projects.
The Friends of Elizabeth Park sponsors a series of tours
and educational workshops that are free and open to the public, and which run from March
to November.
