INROADS
On Saturday, July 23, 2011, The Friends
of Elizabeth Park welcomed 125 college
age interns from INROADS who
spent the morning (and some of the
afternoon) volunteering at Elizabeth
Park. Thanks to these very helpful
young folks, our gardens were weeded,
mulch was spread in the Rose Garden,
trash in the park was picked up and
disposed and the new Heritage Rose
Garden got a new mulching ground cover.
We calculated the amount hours of
volunteer time and figured it would have
taken two employees over two weeks to
accomplish the same amount of work.
Thank you INROADS! The Friends of
Elizabeth Park want to thank you for
choosing to spend your volunteer time
with us.

UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT LAW SCHOOL
For the second year in a row, the
University of Connecticut Law School
has asked their incoming first year law
students to spend some time volunteering
in their new neighborhood. Once again
they’ve chosen to work in the Elizabeth
Park Rose Garden. On August 26, 2011
twenty first year students weeded and
deadheaded in the Rose Garden while
getting to know each other and hopefully
getting to know and love our roses! Our
gardens are beautiful because of caring
individuals like the UCONN Law
Students. The Friends of Elizabeth Park
thank you for spending your time with us
caring for our gardens!

A Gift of Roses, From
Beijing to
Elizabeth Park . |
|
| |
Most exchange programs with
other countries usually involve
students, not roses.
|
|
| |
Elizabeth Park and
the Beijing
Botanical Garden |
|
After
a 7,000 mile journey this past
spring, some twenty rose bushes
made their way from Beijing,
China to JFK Customs and then
onto Hartford.
In the near future, roses from
Elizabeth Park will be on their
way to the Beijing Botanical
Garden. This is part of a rose
exchange program between the two
parks, and presents an
opportunity to establish a
long-term friendship between
Hartford and Beijing.
As required by federal law, the
roses were first transferred to
the United States Department of
Agriculture (USDA) facility in
Jamaica, NY. While there, the
roses underwent careful
inspection by USDA agents prior
to shipment to Hartford.
Ultimately, and with loving
care, these roses bearing such
names as Bai Zuan Shi, and Jin
Fen Lian will find a new home at
Elizabeth Park in Hartford, CT.
The arrival of these roses was
part of an effort by Friends of
Elizabeth Park board member Mike
Patitucci, Marci Martin, Park
Rosarian, John Mattia, rose
hybridizer, Jenni You
and others.
|
The purpose of this
undertaking was to
acquire
a variety of
different and
unique roses to
supplement the
existing Elizabeth
Park rose garden
collection, as well
as to add an
international aspect
to the garden.
Since China is where
roses were first
cultivated nearly
5,000 years ago,
what better place to
begin this
adventure.
In early 2010, Mr.
Patitucci contacted
Mr. Zhao, the
director at the
Beijing Botanical
Garden, with the
idea of creating a
rose exchange
program between
their respective
parks. With the help
of Ms. You and
countless emails,
Mr. Zhao warmly
accepted the offer.
It soon became
apparent that this
would be no easy
task. Imported roses
are designated as
restricted plants
overseen and subject
to specific rules
and regulation by
the USDA. This
ensures the imported
roses are healthy
and pass inspection
upon entry into the
USA.
The roses are held
in quarantine for a
period of two years
at a pre-approved
site where they will
be inspected
periodically by the
USDA and CT
Agricultural Dept.
Ms. Cui, the Beijing
Botanical Garden’s
rosarian, assisted
in preparing the
roses for shipment,
inspection, and
certification in
China prior to their
journey to the USA.
As part of the rose
exchange program,
The Friends of |

Bejing
Botanical Garden |
Elizabeth Park will send the
limited addition Elizabeth Park
Centennial Roses to Mr. Zhao in
Beijing.
These special roses were
hybridized by John Mattia of
Orange, Connecticut for the 100th
year anniversary of the Park’s
Rose Garden in 2004. Located on
300 acres, the Beijing Botanical
Garden is an exquisitely
designed and maintained park
featuring a large glass
conservatory with many tropical
plants along with a vast and
extensive variety of plants and
trees. Its rose garden covers
about seventeen acres with a
collection of 100,000 roses and
over 1,000 varieties.
Part of the parks focus is to
provide scientific research and
education for the Chinese people
and international visitors.
Hartford’s Elizabeth Park is
about 100 acres, with a two and
a half acre rose garden. The
Elizabeth Park rose garden is
the oldest municipally operated
rose garden in the country. It
opened to the public in 1904. It
has about 800 varieties and over
15,000 roses bushes and arches.
Rambling roses cover arched
walkways in the garden and the
beds are filled with roses of
every shape and color. Along the
border, fences of climbing and
shrub roses provide a colorful
background for the bedding
plants.
Mr. Patitucci noted that the
complexity and difficulty
involved in this undertaking was
well beyond expectation. He
gives much credit to the USDA
and others in bringing this rose
exchange program to fruition.

The Connecticut Unit of the
Herb
Society of America,
the group that maintains the
herb garden at Elizabeth Park,
began a new project this
summer. They are growing herbs
in the old cold frame beds and
harvesting those herbs for
Freshplace, a new food pantry in
Hartford.
The Hartford Courant’s
columnist, Susan Campbell,
recently ran a front-page
article,
“A Food Super-Pantry”,
highlighting this new food
pantry. The herbs grown at
Elizabeth Park by the Ct Unit
are taken to Freshplace on
designated shopping days.
Freshplace is teaching its
clients the benefits of using
fresh herbs in cooking. Herbs
are high in nutrition, low in
calories and can reduce or
eliminate the use of salt as the
intensity of flavor from the
herbs replaces the salt’s flavor
enhancing properties.
The Ct Unit of the Herb Society
of America would like to thank
the City of Hartford for
allowing them to plant in the
old cold frame beds, the Friends
of Elizabeth Park for supporting
the project, but most
importantly the Park’s city
workers, especially David, who
helped start the seed in the
greenhouse and who, along with
his Park colleagues, supported
this new effort with enthusiasm.
